Sir: -
I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you, herewith, to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies a copy of a letter from the British and Chinese Corporation of the 9th. instant in regard to the appointment by the Chinese Government of a Consulting Engineer for the Chinese Section of the Canton-Kowloon Railway.
In accordance with the request contained in that letter, Sir E. Grey proposes, subject to the concurrence of the Earl of Crewe, to inform His Majesty's Minister at Peking that he approves of the views expressed by the Corporation to their agents in China in their telegram of the 8th. instant with regard to the Consulting Engineer Mr. Jeme, and to instruct him to uphold the terms of the Canton Kowloon Railway Agreement.

tish and Chinese Corporation of the 9th. instant in re-
gard to the appointment by the Chinese Government of a
Consulting Engineer for the Chinese Section of the
